Introducing Very Young Children to Robotics?
Posted by seralatterell on June 4, 2022 at 11:31 pmWhat are some ways to get very young children involved with robotics? I think some of the interesting LEGO kits might be too difficult for kids 6 and under.

You might check out First Lego League. They have activities specifically for ages 4-6. My son was older than that when we started, but I’ve seen some of what the kids did. Many groups are run through schools, but there are also community groups as well. My son’s group is a 4H robotics team.
Also Lego Education has a listing of lesson plans that other people have created and you can search by age. You can see what they are using and get ideas to do with your kids.

That is very helpful, thank you! I had been trying to find a 4H group in our area but it doesn’t appear we have one. The Lego League I had never heard of. Hopefully we can do something like that!

If you go to the First Lego League website there is a button to find near me and it will take you to your country’s site then you can click it again and it will list all teams in the area.

My kiddo is 4 and with my guidance he’s putting robot kits together for 9+ yrs. He can’t read yet so I’ll point to the picture of the step we’re in and he’ll find the shapes and put them together as the instructions say. Parental interest and complete attention with the child go a long way I’ve noticed.

In hindsight, I think these were ways we introduced robotics: remote control vehicles or toys (car, boat, plane, R2D2, drone). Also dji robomaster (expensive but some building involved). Building wooden animatronics. That said, neither child has shown a deep interest in robotics.
