The Pharos Lighthouse was constructed at the start of the Ptolemy Dynasty, at the ancient port city of Alexandria – which is famed for it’s Great Library and Serapeum. These two institutions are recognised as a significant seat of learning, functioning as a platform for the exchange of ideas and culture.

The lighthouse utilised reflective technology to enhance and direct the sun’s rays during the day and firelight at night, enabling the lighthouse’s beacon to shine in perpetuity – 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The light was reputed to have been able to be seen from a very great distance, acting as a navigational guide to draw ships towards Alexandria’s harbour – in a similar manner to the function of runway lights at a modern airport. It is even from the Pharos Lighthouse that the word pharology is derived – that is, the study of lighthouses.

Let your light be a beacon for the world.

Thanks @EmilyLightfoot for the background. There are so many to chose from since I think it’s human nature to want to improve. One (among many) is thinking how we can positively affect education & teen/pre-teen development in areas that have a disproportionate amount of resources. What could be some of the constructive, forward-thinking aspects to talk about that could define an encouraging fresh look at a well-known topic?

Hi Mike, I have actually been drawing up a list of initial discussion topic categories for this group, to give people a few ideas to kick off the conversation (but still in the process of refining it!). I 100% agree with your suggestion about there needing to be a bit more innovative in many areas of educational resources, etc for pre-teens and teens – I’ll open up a new discussion topic for Education Innovation where we can discuss exactly these sort of gaps and how we could address them. ????
