Architecture Reads
I thought these two books were great for children interested in architecture/engineering or even just for fun/inspiration.
What Adults Don’t Know About Architecture, The School of Life – my child picked this one, and then I read it too. Pros: easy to read, the pictures, gives you a vocabulary and context for describing architecture and its impact. Cons: there was a part of me that struggled with the decisiveness around certain thoughts. I also wondered about when is it too soon to introduce a summary about a topic as opposed to waiting so that a child’s own personal exposure provides context and the ability to form their own opinions.
Drawing Outside the Lines: A Julia Morgan Novel, Susan J. Austin – fictionalized story of architect Julia Morgan (Hearst Castle, Honolulu’s YWCA). Pros: inspirational, easy to read, historical context, synthesizes/presents life lessons. Cons: it’s fiction that feels so realistic. Hopefully, it will inspire more inquiry into Julia Morgan and her works, and a young person would have the ability to determine where fact ends and fiction begins.
